S4M

S4M : A Multifaceted French Urban Artist

S4M, whose real name is Samuel Guillemot, is a French artist based in Paris, known for his street art and detailed portraits created with ballpoint pen on newspapers. Born in 1971 in Bourges, S4M grew up in Alsace near Obernai in an artistic environment, influenced by his maternal grandfather, an amateur painter and sculptor, as well as his parents who introduced him to museums and exhibitions.

Training and Influence

Passionate about comics from childhood, S4M began by copying characters from Walt Disney and comic artists like Gotlib, Franquin, and Morris. He experimented with various techniques such as India ink, wash, graphite, and watercolor, with a strong preference for black and white. At the age of 15, he took classes with a local painter, learning the fundamentals of observational drawing, shading, and composition (s4m-artwork).

Artistic Career

Working primarily as a television director of photography, S4M gradually incorporated street art into his professional journey. His works are heavily influenced by his cameraman experience, particularly in the use of light and contrasting atmospheres. He is known for his realistic portraits of famous and anonymous figures, often created on repurposed materials like old newspapers or maps, giving them new meaning and a timeless dimension.

Themes and Techniques

S4M’s creations are marked by an exploration of light and gaze, directly connected to his work as a filmmaker. He uses repurposed materials to add narrative depth to his works, transforming ephemeral surfaces into lasting pieces. His artworks include portraits of athletes, inspired by the many sporting events he has professionally covered.

Exhibitions and Recognition

S4M has participated in various exhibitions and artistic projects, gaining recognition for his unique style and innovative techniques. He has also won competitions, such as the SNAC-Expo in California, and collaborated with several galleries and hotels to showcase his works, including Carré d’Artistes and, of course, our restaurant Table du Moby Dick featuring his Golden Parachute and a stunning rhinoceros.
